Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can create air pollution by being photo chemically reactive in the atmosphere. Many of the volatile solvents used to make paints and coatings are among these pollutants. Some of the solvents used are also classified as Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) as well.
Intercoastal Paint’s water based products do not use any HAPs solvents, and the VOCs we use are kept to a minimum. We have addressed the historical issues of dry time and performance of water based coatings by using the best technology and raw materials available today.
For Example: Back in the day when shop primers for structural steel were mostly ready to spray oil based alkyd primers, they typically contained over 4½ pounds of VOCs per gallon. The old ready to spray alkyd shop primers are still occasionally being used today, but only at a fraction of their prior usage level.
Today, Intercoastal’s most popular primer line is our unique Fast Dry Water Based Shop Primers which contains only .33 pounds VOCs per gallon and are able to dry under high humidity/lower temperature conditions. Here the reduction in emissions is even more dramatic.
Our Water Based Enamels have slightly higher VOCs than the primers, but at less than 1 pound per gallon VOCs, they are substantially still low compared to their solvent based counter parts, plus they contain no HAPs solvents.
Our water based products are non flammable, which makes them popular with the Fire Marshal and the insurance companies. Their low toxicity is a plus when it comes to protecting your employees.
