 FAQS

Paint is our business.

Our experts are happy to answer your questions.

1. What is meant by VOC?

VOC or Volatile Organic Compounds is simply the amount of solvent (thinner) contained in a gallon of paint. This is important because of air quality concerns. Environmental regulations are dictating tighter control on emissions of organic solvents into the atmosphere.

Typically, a solventborne alkyd enamel may contain 4 to 4½ pounds of VOC per gallon. On the other hand, waterborne enamel can contain less than 2 pounds of VOC per gallon. Some Intercoastal Paint metal primers have less than .33 pounds of VOC per gallon.

2. What is required to paint over galvanized steel?

Our Universal Primers (IP 592 Flat Black Universal and IP 593 Grey Green Universal) work well over galvanized steel. Make certain the surface is clean and dry without any contaminates such as grease or oil. No other preparation is needed.

3. What do you recommend for ornamental iron work such as burglar bars or wrought iron fences?

For the prime coat you should use our IP 508 rusting primer. For the finish coat either our QS 799 Semi gloss black or QS 751 Satin Black are excellent choices for this application. Both of these finish coats contain half pound rust inhibitive pigment per gallon. All of these products are fast drying for shorter production times.

4. Can I get special colors?

We stock some equipment colors such as New Cat Yellow and Case Power Tan. We may have your color in stock; if not we can custom blend any color. There is usually a 25-50 gallon minimum for custom colors. View our color card here.

5. What is meant by high solids paint?

This refers to the amount of solvent (thinner) in the paint. High Solids coatings contain less solvent than conventional solids paint. In some cases high solids coatings are required by federal, state, county, or city governments in order to reduce air pollution.

6. What are VOC compliant coatings?

These are coatings that contain no more than a specified amount of thinner per gallon (VOC). A typical maximum allowable VOC is 3.5 lbs thinner per gallon (Conventional coatings could have 41/2 lbs of thinner per gallon or more). We have high solids primers from 2.8-3.1 lbs per gallon as well as waterborne primers at .33 lbs/gallon. These are used primarily as shop primers in the metal building industry.

7. Do you have fast drying enamels?

Yes, the QS products dry in 30 minutes. The QSA products dry in 15-20 minutes.

8. Do you carry paint in aerosol cans?

No, but we know a company that will put our paint in aerosol cans for you.

9. What do you recommend to kill rust?

We recommend Rust-X by Integrity Industries, which should be available at a lumber yard near you. This product is water-based, easy to use and quite effective. The rust should be tight rust. Pitted rust should be sanded smooth to prevent the rust from protruding through the paint film.

10. What is your recommendation for painting concrete floors?

Polyamide cured epoxies are excellent coatings for concrete floors (See our AE series).
